Deconstruction of Sound in Shifty

For this blog post, I will be analysing the sound used in the trailer for Shifty, in order to gain inspiration for our own soundtrack.

This trailer uses a mixture of non-diegetic music and diegetic dialogue. The former is used in a layering effect, as it begins at 0:01 with a drum beat, which has a fairly fast tempo, hence building tension as this sound mimics a frantic heartbeat.

At 0:06 a symbol sound is added to the beat, which is parallel to the scene as this adds a more positive and uplifting tone, hence reflecting the mood of the actors as they are seen to be smiling and happy.

At 0:12 a bass guitar in a basic rhythm is layered on top, hence showing an increase in the pace.

At 0:19 the drum beat suddenly picks up in speed, increasing the suspense, and at 0:20 some electric/ techno keyboard notes are also added.

Then, at 0:27 there is a sliding transition, at which point over the non-diegetic score we hear a non-diegetic sound effect of a cash register.

At 0:35, as the diegetic siren sound quietens, the non-diegetic music lowers in pitch and more bass guitar is added to reflect the tone as tension rises.

Following this, at 0:43 the score very suddenly stops and is replaced by a low pitched hushed noise which conforms to conventions of the trailer form as this creates suspense by indicating a change in mood and pace, hence creating an enigma.

The layering effect is continued, with high pitched piano notes added at 0:46 which imply a more negative and serious tone. At 0:51 another non-diegetic sound effect is used, and this one mimics the sound of a quiet explosion, accompanied by a fade out transition, and the low hushed sound without the higher pitched notes continues until 0:55 where there is a loud, low, non-diegetic sound effect with the purpose of adding a sinister effect.

After this there is then a very high pitched sound accompanying the low hushed note, and this is used to make the audience uncomfortable, hence building tension, and the high pitched noise disappears briefly before being brought back very suddenly at 1:02 at a much louder dynamic.

At 1:04 the techno keyboard notes are once again added, creating a beat that causes suspense, and continues for ten seconds.

The sound changes again at 1:14, replaced by a low non-diegetic sound effect layered over a note at a very high pitch which once again builds tension, hence showing the application of Todorov's theory of equilibrium, and after this there is a low pitched sound with a drum beat layered over it.

Over that there is a new high pitched sound that sounds electronic, and this builds up until 1:21 at which point there is a low pitched sound that resembles something being dropped or a distant door being slammed shut, followed by low pitched non-diegetic music that is hushed so as to build suspense, accompanied by violins at a very high pitch and a high tempo which makes the audience feel uncomfortable, but is at a quiet dynamic so that we can focus on the diegetic dialogue.

Then, at 1:25 there is a new whining sound that is very high pitched, and grows in dynamics, going from soft to loud, which increases the uncomfortable atmosphere. We then hear a low note of a drum. Non-diegetic music with a fast beat and a mixture of low and high notes then play, slowly increasing in tempo until it cuts off completely before very quickly restarting at a much faster tempo until finally ending on a muted drum beat.

This is done so as to build momentum and suspense, hence creating a sense of disequilibrium that conforms to conventions of teaser trailers.

Evaluation
From this deconstruction, we most enjoyed the layering technique used at the beginning of the trailer, and how it contrasts to the fast pace of the ending. We would also like to use a similar technique to show the transition from equilibrium to disequilibrium, though we have decided not to use the layering technique and will include more technological sounds so as to further reinforce the link our film has to social media and the effect it has.
