Balloon Scene Reshoot Filming Plan

In this blog post, I will be planning the reshoot of the balloon scene. Audience feedback revealed that many of our viewers could not read what was written on the red balloon, and so we decided to reshoot this scene with just one word written on the balloon, which will hopefully be easier to read.

Final Scene Reshoot Filming Plan

In this blog post, I will document the filming plan for our reshoot of the very final shot, a close up of Ellie's eyes. We had previously attempted to film this shot, but soon discovered that one of her eyes was out of frame, and so decided to reshoot it.

Filming Script Sunday 24th January

After creating the first draft of our trailer, we decided that we needed more shots from social media accounts to show the link between the problem of the media and our character's struggle about her body image. Because of this, we thought that it was necessary to add more shots from Pinterest, rather then just comments from Facebook. This is what I will be completing. The shots that we wanted are; a shot of scrolling down a page on Pinterest that shows images of 'skinny' people as this is society's perception of beauty then we wanted some static screenshots to use throughout the ending of our trailer, when the editing becomes fast paced to show exactly how these images are affecting our character.

Evaluation:

This piece of filming went really well, I was able to get all of the necessary shots for this. However, the screen capture software doesn't seem to be very good quality, even though it is easy to use, as the footage that came from it seems to be not focused properly, but the footage is still usable. 

Filming Plan For Tuesday 15th December

After filming the final scene of our trailer on our first filming day, we decided that the footage wasn't good enough to use and the general idea was too final for a teaser trailer. We have decided to re film this final scene and decided to change, the main character, Jane, would be shown in a clinic feeling nervous and look in a bad way. this would make it less final and more of the beginning to her recovery.

• Where will we be filming? 

At school, Wellbeing Room. 

• Pros and Cons of the location?

Pros: It is a room for healthcare and so there are lots of healthcare posters and it looks realistic. Cons:If someone is taken ill in the school, we would have to cancel our filming session. 

• What shots will we take? 

Extreme close ups of Jane picking at her jumper, looking uncomfortable, eyes with mascara smudged. Shots long shot or medium shot of her showing her alone.

• How long would it take? 

We are giving the timing of this filming session an hour, 1:20-2:20, during lunchtime at school.

• What equipment would we need? 

Camera and Tri-pod.

 As we are filming a lot on location for our piece, I thought it would be a good idea to see what kind of lighting would be a good idea to use to create the mood we wanted for our piece.

I used the indoor cage with my rabbit and guinea pig in it as the subjects as they were a stationary object in a place where the light is easy to manipulate.

All the lights on

To start with, I took a photo of them with no lights on in the room and the light coming in from the room next door to see what effect this had.  It light up the room fairly well however there were some shadows which perhaps we wouldn't want in our piece.

One curtain closed and no lights

The second photo I took was when I turned on all the lights in the room.  Due to the lights being blue LED lights, they gave the room and the photo a blue-ish tint but it light up the room really well with no unnecessary shadows.  This would be useful for us to know because if we film on a day which is darker outside, we then have a good idea of what the shot could look like if we put the lights on.

Both curtains closed and lights off

The third shot i did was with the lights off in the room again and with one of the curtains closed to see how badly the loss of lighting from half of the screen would affect the photo.  As shown to the right, the photo wasn't that badly effected as the subject was still fully lit and there wasn't any shadows in the shot that would affect it.

The last shot I took was with both the curtains closed but with the lights still on in the other room.  This meant that some light could still get through but it didn't illuminate the subject of the photo particularly well. Therefore I recommend that this set up is only used if there is an effective and bright enough light source behind the curtains.  However, this lighting could be used in the scene where the protagonist is having a sleepover with her friends but is shown to be alienating and distancing herself from them.

Once these scenes are completed we will hopefully have all footage, bar the bridge reshoot complete, which we will hopefully have done within the next month if all those required from the group can attend. 

Evaluation of Filming - Balloon Scene (9.11.15)

On the 9th of November, Georgieanne and Ellie filmed one of the opening scenes of the trailer in a field in Sutton Valence.

• Using two balloons, one white, upon which we wrote words associated to innocence and happiness, and one red on which we wrote words related to sadness and loss of innocence.
• We used Georgieanne's younger brother to play 'young Ellie' and this worked well.
• The weather when filming was very windy, however, this coupled with the greying skies worked well in setting the scene around the shot. The weather did prove a problem with holding balloons as they were very vulnerable to being blown away, as happened at the end of filming to our white one.

Flash Forward Filming Plan

In this blog post, I will be talking about the plan for our third piece of filming, looking at the logistics and how we plan on ensuring that we have all of the necessary equipment.

Times: 16:00 - 16:30

Shots: We plan on shooting the shot in which we see Frankie (posing as young Ellie) holding a balloon which has words such as 'innocence' and 'happiness' written on it. This shot will then cut to another shot of Ellie in the same position, holding a balloon with negative words written on it, such as 'worthless' and 'gross'.

Locations: Field in Sutton-Valence

Equipment: For this scene, we require two balloons - one white, and one red, both with writing on them. We also need a camera, and a tripod, which we have acquired from school.

Costume: A black coat and black trousers.

Permission for Filming: Not required.

Scene Reshoot - Scale Scene (5.11.15)

Having had another look at the footage we had shot we decided to reshoot the scales scene. 

This is because in the footage the scale used was very dusty and didn't look as though it has been used for a while - contradicting the storyline that she frequently checks her weight. 

Also, people would normally check their weight usually do so without clothes, so as to not interfere with the number shown. In the footage we shot the character is wearing socks, implying that she is fully clothed, and unrealistic of a real life situation.

Ellie will reshoot this by herself, using a stack of books as a mini tripod for the low shot, without socks and after having cleaned the set of scales.   

Filming Script (22.10.15)

Date: 22.10.15

The shots in Ashford town centre went really well. We were able to shoot the timelapse and use the GoPro for POV shots around the town and the shots came out really well. We were able to take shots around ashford because the public's faces would be hard to see, we thought that we might be approached by some people and asked if we could make sure they weren't in the shots, however this did not occur. 

The shots at the train station were alot harder to obtain. It took us nearly an hour to obtain the permission to film on the location of the footbridge. However, once up there we were able to take the shots planned however we didn't realise how high the barriers of the footbridge were and thought that this would be a problem in our film. We didn't think that it would be believable and realistic if the character was contemplating suicide on a footbridge that would be very difficult to climb over. Because of this, we think a possible reshoot may need to be in order. 

In conclusion, it was mostly a successful filming day and most of the shots work really well and are in good quality, however, we will have to go through the shots at the footbridge and determine how we should proceed with this.

Evaluation of 20.10.15 Filming

We captured all the shots we were hoping to get - however the lighting in some of them is not so good as it appears quite dark and some footage is difficult to see. This may mean that these shots need to be retaken or changed at a later date. 
We are going to meet up on 22.10.15 in Ashford to take further shots as plotted on our storyboard.

Timelapse Filming Plan

This blog post contains the plan for our second day of filming, looking at the logistics and how we plan on ensuring that we have all of the necessary equipment.

Shots: We plan on shooting the scene in which our protagonist (Ellie) is in a town centre and is feeling isolated, as well as our final scene in which it is insinuated that she is contemplating suicide.

Locations: Ashford Town Centre and Headcorn Railway Station Footbridge.

Equipment: For the scene where Ellie is walking through town and is feeling as though everyone is feeling as though everyone is talking about her, and for the scene where she is looking down at the railway tracks, we require the Go Pro and the attachments - specifically, the head strap. In order to obtain this, Caitlyn is to go into Maidstone on Wednesday 21st and retrieve the camera from another coursework group.
Also, for the shots of her in town, we need a tripod, which we have acquired from our school.

Costume: In these shots, Ellie is feeling self-conscious and uncomfortable with her body, and so must wear baggy clothes and no make-up to convey this to the audience.

Permission for filming: We are fine to film in Ashford as long as we blur the faces in the background. However, we need permission for filming at Headcorn Railway Station, and so plan on speaking to the ticket seller.

Filming Script 19th October 2015

For our trailer, we wanted to have a clip of Facebook, with it scrolling and showing negative comments on a picture of the main character, which starts her body image concerns. For this, I can use screen capture software that I have on my laptop, LoiLo, and then scroll through Facebook and click on the image that has negative comments on it, like the character would have.

Evaluation:

This piece of filming went really well and didn't take up too much time. The footage seems like the character is using the page, and the audience can see what she sees, which is very effective.
