Theatrical and Teaser Trailer?

For our coursework this year, we have been asked to make a promotional package for a film, including a teaser trailer. I thought that it would be useful to research the differences between a teaser trailer and a theatrical trailer so we know the common conventions and what we should include in our own trailer.

Teaser Trailer
  • Teaser trailers are commonly short in duration at around 1 minute to 1:30 minutes long.
  • Teaser trailers create an enigma with the audience about the film. It is unlikely that the audience would watch the film if they have already been shown all the good parts in the trailer.
  • These are often made during the early stages of editing and so the producers don't have many final shots to add into the trailer, however the advertising of the film is still crucial at that point, so they have less footage to add into the trailer.
  • Also, the famous actors or famous producers/directors are exploited in the trailers to create a hype about the film and the audience of these actors or producers/directors would more likely see this film.
Theatrical Trailer
  • These are launched much closer to the release of the film
  • because it is launched at the final stages of editing more clips are used from the film
  • the trailer is also more about the actual film then the producers/director and actors because they would have most likely already been revealed in a previous teaser trailer or some sort of media coverage.
  • the most common difference is that theatrical trailers are much longer then teaser trailers at around 2 minutes to 2:30 minutes long.
In conclusion, I think that this has been a beneficial piece of research and has given us the conventions of what we should have in our teaser trailer.
