The evolution of genre (Supernatural Horror)

This was a research task looking at past films from 1930's-2010's, in the Supernatural Horror genre, and how they have influenced the generations of films.

Supernatural (1933)

This was made in the same year as Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. This could have influenced the film because it could be showing the growing independence of women as the main character in the film was female. However, because she is a murderess that came back from the dead, it could be seen to show that the mood of the growing independence of woman was a bad thing in this decade.

Strangler of the Swamp (1946)

The film is about an innocent man that had been put to death, getting his revenge. This could be seen as a message to Germany, because this made a year after world war two ended, the film could be saying that the good will always win and get 'justice'.

House on Haunted Hill (1959)

This was around the same time of game shows being popular on TV in the US. This film shows an extreme effect of a type of game show because the film is about staying in a haunted house for a night in order to win some money. Which highlights the problem of greed.

Rosemary's Baby (1968)
This was in the decade of high profile assassinations; JFK, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. The fact that the character of Rosemary being very paranoid about the goings on of her building, could be a representation of the paranoia of this time, because of the murder of these influential people.
The Exorcist (1973)

The main character is a young female actress and the rising influence of Hollywood and films could could have influenced this and the stars and actors.

Poltergeist (1982)
This was the beginning of the increasingly popular 'family home haunting' films and it was an iconic movie of the time because it brought the idea of harmful ghosts into the family home, a place that was once a sanctuary has been turned into an eerie atmosphere through these films.

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

This was also revolutionary in the way that this seemed to be filmed. The film was shot as a student's documentary and seemed all amateur handheld. This made the film seem more realistic and as though it came from true events.

The Ring (2002)
This film brought in the beginning of the possessed object films, rather then a supernatural film being about the ghost. It also brought back the popularity of the evil child in films. The 2000’s were the beginnings of mass digitalisation and so this brought to light the dangers of technology. This film brought in the beginning of the possessed object films, rather then a supernatural film being about the ghost. Paranormal Activity (2007-2014)

This made ‘home haunting’ films very popular, it also brought back the popularity of home videoed styled films which makes it feel more realistic and positions the audience with the characters.
