Mockingjay Trailer Deconstruction

Having had it suggested that we look at dystopia as a genre for our trailer I looked into Mockingjay's trailer for inspiration

  • The trailer is introduced by a long held chord and then we hear the voiceover from the main character. As this is happening we see a range of shots of this character at different points in the film. At 00:19 we finally see the piece of film that the voiceover belongs to.
  • At 00:26 there is a pause in the music and the screen fades in and out to a close up of another character's face on a TV screen
  • Following this there is an increase in the pace of shots used, and the music becomes much more polyphonic in texture
  • At 00:37 a close up shot is used, portraying the main characters look of determinism
  • The films main idea of fighting back and the dystopian genre can be seen through shots such as the long shot at 00:46 where we see an arrow being fired and bursting into flames.
  • Another nod to the dystopian genre can be seen through the consistent use of low key lighting, depicting the grimness the characters are living through
  • A choral vowel sounding effect is used at 1:06, a sound commonly used when a heroic act is being carried out, such as Katniss' fight to save the place and people she loves
  • From 1:15 to 1:27 we see a montage of clips of the film showing the district's downfall. This supports the dystopian genre idea of a being in a bad or unpleasant state
To conclude, I think that if we were to go ahead with a dystopian genre hen we would need to think hard about what location we used, the variety of shots used and the lighting to create the right type of atmosphere as expected in the dystopian genre.
